Intel X48 chipset preview - ASUS P5E3 Premium motherboard

While we've afforded motherboards based around Intel's high-end X38 chipset plenty of coverage recently, it's worth remembering that it's still very much young in relative terms.  This fact perhaps makes it all the more surprising that Intel is already ready to roll with the X38's replacement, X48 - Indeed, the latest speculation is that this particular part has been delayed for a while to allow for motherboard manufacturers to clear their inventory of X38 chips before embarking upon the use of this new chipset.

So, just what does X48 bring to the table over its predecessor?  Is it worthy of note if you already own an X38-based part, or indeed if you're planning to upgrade your system shortly?  We aim to answer these questions today by taking an early look at X48 in the flesh, courtesy of ASUS' P5E3 Premium part slated to be launched once X48 officially becomes a retail product.
