AMD's 'Spider' launch event - Lake Tahoe
I was invited last week to attend an AMD event in Lake Tahoe at the Hyatt Regency out there, and I have to admit I had a fantastic time. I didn't really know what to expect as we were given very little information before hand, but I figured winging it couldn't hurt and I just wanted to see what the what was.
They flew me out baggage class and I got to remember every single reason I hate flying. The less said about it the better, but on a quick side note I would really suggest avoiding pissing off the security people in Phoenix AZ...they kind of strip searched me...
The commute was horrible, but the event was fantastic. I met a ton of great people and made more vendor contacts than I can shake a stick at. There was a lot of excitement in the air about this launch, and I still have quite a bit of it. The Phenom is looking a little weak out the gate, but it's at least competitive and it's very rare to see the first in a newly launched line of CPUs be fantastic; and while the 790FX doesn't have the SB700 yet it's still a good mobo with some insane backwards compatibility. I really do see good things happening with the Spider platform, I just think it's gonna be a couple of months before it becomes overwhelmingly attractive.
